As those who have been following us for a while already know, we at CampusX pursue the goal of creating technological, sustainable and futuristic structures in every city we move to. For us, the idea of Smart City is not a term relegated to the city environment, but it is something that can also be achieved in a micro-reality, such as that of the campus. The brightest example of this mission is certainly our CampusX in Rome designed precisely on the idea of eco-sustainability and energy saving, with thermal and photovoltaic panels that cover part of the production of hot water and street lighting on campus. This ideology also influenced the birth of the new structures, such as the CampusX of Florence and, the highly anticipated, CampusX of Turin .
But what is the future of a real Smart City after covid-19?
According to Wikipedia, this term means «a set of urban planning strategies aimed at optimizing and innovating public services so as to relate the material infrastructures of cities»: therefore, not it is only technological progress that creates an intelligent city, as much as the development of an entire ecosystem capable of hosting this innovation (exactly as we do on our campuses).
To understand each other on a front closer to us at the moment, the coronavirus situation has allowed us to make a great leap forward in the technological field. What happened was the realization of reality: it was not enough to have a computer for someone to project into the future but, it was necessary to build an ecosystem of platforms, interactions and services around the same activity of workers and students.
Starting from our small experience, therefore, we can take the opportunity to talk about a broader discourse linked precisely to the development of a city environment that, as we now know, can be applied to any reality. So what are the essential activities today?
Firstly, there is certainly the retraining of work . As we have seen in recent days , the same RUS is asking to loudly a realignment of universities and the world of work, in order to deal with new issues that would allow to create innovative jobs in projects so far little considered, such as those related to ecological policies and those aimed at the implementation of new technologies.
Secondly, there is the or development of energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and safety , understood not only as a mere technological construction but, as a real creation of an ecosystem. Without going into the merits of specific creations in the urban context, it will suffice to consider that, to date, the use of ecological systems would allow us to create a Smart City consisting of six dimensions, in which each actor has a specific purpose in safeguarding the environment and technical growth.
In a smart and distant future, therefore, we can see a smart economy technological and accessible remotely to both the smart people , understood as an informed community, involved and attentive to government directives, and smart governance , understood as an administration capable of managing , monitoring and providing remote services to all facilities, including hospitals.
The growth of smart mobility , smart living and smart environment also moves around these aspects: three themes that we have always carried ahead on our campuses with the creation of environments designed to ensure comfort and well-being, but also with small precautions, such as the distribution of our Xbottles to all our guests .
In conclusion, we can say that the future of the smart city is the smart city : everything for which this futuristic vision of society was born and was designed is, to date, perfectly applicable and is, indeed, highly recommended.
