According to AlmaLaurea, the first-generation students who graduated from Italian universities in 2018 were around 196 thousand. This term identifies two types of students, both immigrants with parents residing in foreign countries, and those who first , in the family, they approached the university world: these undergraduates represented about 70.1% of the total number of university students in the world.
The constant growth of this percentage of boys, however, was also followed by a strong abandonment of the same before graduation: according to a research by the Washington Post, in fact, about 69% of these students expressed the desire to abandon their studies before graduating, driven by the desire to work to help the family.
FOR THE FIRST UNIVERSITY: DIFFICULTY AND FEELINGS
According to the Institute for Quality of Life, Sodexo, in 2020 the number of first-generation students will increase considerably, so it is necessary to implement, already from the campuses, actions able to help them in the continuation of their studies.
If on the one hand, in fact, 87% declared themselves grateful towards the university and showed themselves to be enterprising and motivated to continue their studies, on the other hand the lack of university services and the absence of courses dedicated to the integration and facilitating their entry into this new world has undermined the success of their will, favoring the development of other avenues.
According to the experts of the main US universities, in fact, it is precisely these deficiencies that create discomfort for first-generation students.
Unlike their colleagues with graduated parents, the latter need attention and targeted support that makes them feel part of university life and worthy of attending it. The economic, social conditions and, in the case of immigrant students, linguistic limitations can cause an increase in these situations of hardship, favoring the abandonment of studies.
FIRST GENERATIONS: CONCRETE AID TO UNIVERSITY GROWTH
Offers in the field of catering, networking activities and presence of residences equipped with all the needs: these, according to experts, are the main means of support for first-generation students.
In fact, structures such as CampusX have proven to be the best at welcoming this type of student who, finding themselves in an environment equipped with all the comforts and needs, feel less the weight of the costs and obligations of a university life from Offsite.
The improvement of the conditions of these students who represent, as we have seen, more than half of university students, is able to improve the entire academic circuit.
For this reason, one of the main missions of university and residence environments, such as CampusX, must be to better help them, dedicating to them the greatest services to face a new and difficult path.
